The perception of Spanish lexical stress by French speakers: stress identification and time cost
نویسندگان
چکیده
The perception of lexical stress in Spanish by French speakers with and without knowledge of the language has been studied with a technique allowing the evaluation of the individual or combined effects of the acoustic parameters related to the perception of stress. Results suggest in first place that the exposure to L2 makes the French speakers more sensitive to stress. Secondly, although F0 seems to constitute the crucial cue in the identification of stress position, results point out that, when stress is accurately perceived, the time necessary to detect it is affected by manipulations involving amplitude.

The role of the acoustic correlates of stress in the perception of Spanish accentual contrasts by French speakers
The aim of this research is to examine the role of the acoustic correlates of lexical stress in the integration of accentual information in French speakers. A shape/pseudoword matching task is used, as it implies not only a low-level acoustic processing, but also a lexical processing. Results show, on the one hand, an influence of the accentual pattern in the perception of stress; on the other,...
متن کاملA typological study of stress ‘deafness’
Previous research has shown that native speakers of French, as opposed to those of Spanish, exhibit stress 'deafness', i.e. have difficulties distinguishing stress contrasts. In French, stress is non-contrastive, while in Spanish, stress is used to make lexical distinctions. We examine three other languages with non-contrastive stress, Finnish, Hungarian and Polish. In two experiments with a sh...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملThe use of the Odd-One-Out task in the study of the perception of lexical stress in Spanish by German-speaking listeners
In the present research we investigated the perception of Spanish stress in German-speaking listeners in comparison with native Spanish listeners. We used a cognitively demanding Odd-One-Out task and stimuli with variability in voice and/or in intonation. The main findings showed that the German-speaking listeners were able to perceive the Spanish lexical stress to a very high degree (76% of co...
